If you’re an on-the-go kinda guy or travel a lot you’re going to want some of these portable tech essentials. After all, the modern man needs to be connected and entertained.

I’m not going to cover the pieces of tech you’re most likely already are going to have such as a smartphone or laptop. They’re not even just essentials these days, they’re almost mandatory to a fast moving lifestyle.

Lets kick it off shall we?

Wireless Headphones

Wireless headphones are a must have these days. More and more smartphone manufacturers are going down the route of not having a headphone jack on the phone anymore and instead get you to connect through Bluetooth.

I’m a big fan. It does away with that cumbersome cord that gets tangled in everything and gives you a range of movement and freedom back. Downside is that these headphone/earphones need to be charged. So look out for both sound quality as well as battery life.

Too bad that Logitech decided a few years ago to not offer Ultimate Ears consumer headphones anymore (just the Pro range these days), but Sennheiser and B&O make some worthy alternatives.

Portable Wireless Speakers

Portable Power Bank

A life saver (overly dramatic in most cases), but definitely worth investing in. If you’re anything like me, you use your phone all day for calls, messaging, phone conferences, social media and searching for “How to….” answers, but you’re not always going to have your charger or a charge point close by.

Enter the Portable Power Bank. Make sure its charged overnight, pop it in your bag and when your battery life is getting low, just hook it up for a charge. It’s that easy. Look for portability and the size of the charger battery (measured in “aH”). The bigger the charger battery, the more charge it gives you. Easy.

Most obvious choices are from Cygnett and Jackery.

So, I like cameras, sue me. For my more professional shoots I use a Nikon DSLR camera, but I also like to have something more compact that I can just chuck in a bag and can take great video footage with as well.

GoPros are ideal for that type of work. They’re small, durable and can be fitted out with a ton of accessories depending on your need. Plus compared to a DSLR camera they’re pretty cheap (don’t get me started on the cost of a lens for one of those), but I understand they’re not for everyone’s budget. The HERO6 is the latest and greatest and retails in Australia for $749.95.

Our finally recommended essential may not be the most portable, but compared to a full sized laptop or notebook it’s smaller and capable for when you’re on the go, want to stay connected and even do some necessary work, the Apple iPad Pro.

It comes in both 10.5″ and 12.9″ Retina display sizes, but the smaller version should do the trick easily. Get a portable keyboard and the Pencil and off you go. Like with most Apple products memory is not easily upgraded once you have it so choose carefully when you buy and keep your needs in mind. I’d also recommend getting a snazzy cover with it. Have a look at what the cool guys from This is Ground have to offer in one of our previous articles.

So, those are our suggestions for portable essentials. Which portable tech can’t you go without when you’re on-the-go? Let us know in the comments!
