The Classic Margarita, the perfect drink to start your weekend with. Well, lets be honest, any day of the week will do, but Friday is at the top of the list. This cocktail combines my two favourite ingredients, tequila and limes.

Good tequila, bad tequila

Now, we’ve all had our share of bad tequila. What makes a good tequila? It should be made from 100% agave. Good tequila doesn’t give you the worst hangover the next morning since it doesn’t substitute parts of the mixture with other sugar alcohols. My personal favourite is Tequila Herradura, in particular their reposado variety.

Benefits of tequila

Yep, tequila is actually good for you, but as with all alcohol you can’t have it unless you’re at least 18 years of age (21 in some countries)!

Some of these benefits are:

  • It’s a probiotic and prebiotic
  • Aids digestion
  • Assists in weight-loss
  • Lowers your blood pressure
  • Aids in inducing sleep
  • No hangover with the good stuff!

Making your Margarita

You’re going to need:

  • 45mL Tequila Herradura reposado
  • 15mL triple sec – Cointreau
  • 15mL agave nectar
  • 15-30mL fresh lime juice (depending on taste)

I use agave nectar instead of sugar syrup since I don’t like to use refined sugar – remember that hang over!

It’s really simple…add all the ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Strain straight into a salt-rimmed rocks glass, top with ice and garnish with a lime wedge.

For a Frozen Margarita, quadruple the ingredients and add them to a blender, fill with ice and pulse until the ice has broken up and the mixture is combined. Serve in salt-rimmed martini glasses and garnish with a lime wheel.
